Born on the beaches of California.
Hang Ten was born on the beaches of California in 1960, amidst the growing surf culture along the US West Coast.
Founders Duke Boyd and Doris Moore wanted to create clothes that surfers could actually use in the water – functional, durable, and designed for life around the ocean. The result was one of the world's first true surf brands.
More than sixty years later, Hang Ten lives on as a symbol of surf culture, beach life, and a relaxed lifestyle inspired by the sun, the sea, and the freedom of the coast.
California Roots
In the early 1960s, surfing grew rapidly along the California coast. Surfers needed clothes that worked in the water and could handle long days at the beach. Duke Boyd therefore began developing boardshorts that fit better and could withstand both surfing and beach life.
Hang Ten quickly became popular among surfers in Southern California and was an early pioneer in shaping what would later become the entire surf and beach lifestyle culture.
What Does “Hang Ten” Mean?
The name Hang Ten comes from a classic surfing maneuver where the surfer walks to the very front of the board and lets all ten toes hang over the edge. It's one of the most iconic moves in longboard surfing and symbolizes balance, style, and complete control over the wave.
This move also inspired the well-known Hang Ten logo – two feet representing exactly this moment.
California Surf Culture
During the 1970s, Hang Ten grew rapidly to become one of the most recognizable surf brands in the world.
The brand represented more than just surfing – it was about a lifestyle. Beach days, coastal road trips, music, friends, and the freedom of living by the ocean.
Hang Ten was one of the first brands to bring surf culture from the beach into everyday life.
