Hang Ten was born in California in 1960, amidst a surf culture where days were governed by waves, sun, and sea. The brand emerged from the need for clothing that actually worked for surfers – durable, comfortable, and created for life between the water and the shore.
What began as function soon became a style and an expression of something greater: freedom, community, and the laid-back California feeling that is still the core of Hang Ten.
1960 · The Beginning
Born for the water.
Hang Ten began with a simple need: surf clothing had to work when the ocean does what it wants. Boardshorts needed to fit well, withstand long days, and work just as naturally in the waves as they did on the beach.
The functional quickly became a style. And the style became a part of California's growing surf culture.
What does Hang Ten mean?
Ten toes over the edge.
“Hang Ten” is the moment when a longboard surfer walks all the way to the front of the board and lets all ten toes hang over the nose. Balance, timing, and full presence all at the same time.
It is also the idea behind the iconic footprint logo – a symbol that has followed Hang Ten since the early years of surf culture.
